NEXT SALE 30TH APRIL AT 12 NOON

✞🙏✞ The history of Good Friday also known as #HolyFriday #GreatFriday #BlackFriday goes back to 1st-century Judea, most likely in 30 CE or 33 CE.

In the biblical story Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples on what is now marked as #MaundyThursday

He was then betrayed by his follower Judas Iscariot, who revealed his location to the Romans in return for 30 pieces of silver.

The Jewish religious leaders condemned Jesus for claiming to be the son of God and king of the Jews.

He was sent to Pontius Pilate, (As seen in the painting below) who ultimately sentenced Jesus to crucifixion—the highest form of criminal punishment at the time. Jesus was then beaten, forced to carry a heavy wooden cross through jeering crowds and finally nailed to the cross by his wrists and feet, where he hung until he died, later that day.

This C16th altar panel from the workshop of Hans Holbein the Elder (1460-1524) will be sold in our selected sale on the 30th April.
