N.B. A copy after Batoni's now-lost original formerly in the Staatliche Museen, Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (see A.M. Clark, Oxford 1985, p. 226, cat. no. 60, pl. 56), By the end of 18th Century Batoni's original was widely celebrated by Art Critics and prompted numerous copies. Anton Graff alone is thought to have produced fourteen copies of the work. (See E.P. Bowron and P.B. Kerber, Pompeo Batoni, London 2007, p. 136). It is possible that the present work is an example of Graff's many copies

LOT 101: HUNG CHONG, CANTON AND SHANGHAI, A PAIR OF DECORATIVE CHINESE SILVER TAZZAS, CIRCA 1900
Each tazza having eight repoussé decorative panels, depicting various birds, figures, animal scenes amongst foliage. Raised by a stylised stem, modelled after dragon with carp body, possibly Chiwen, inscribed to bottom ‘Presented to Lieut. B.H Ryves 14th Sikhs By His Brother Officers, December 1900’.

Comprising a teapot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl, teapot and coffee pot decorated with reeded leaf band rim, chased woman’s face mask sockets, carved wooden thumb grip handles and finial, milk Jug and sugar bowl having similar decoration with woman’s face mask thumb grip handles, gilt washed interiors, all raised on circular footed bases.
