LOT 783: CIRCLE OF GEORGE STUBBS, 1724 - 1806, A LARGE MID 18TH CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS

Horse attacked by lion before a rocky landscape, signed Stubbs lower right, bearing Christie’s stencil verso, held in a fine gilt frame, relined.

(sight 76.5cm x 97cm, canvas 78.5cm x 99cm, frame 104.5cm x 124.5cm)


The composition relates closely to George Stubbs’ celebrated Lion Attacking a Horse series of the early 1760s, a subject that combines anatomical precision with heightened drama. It corresponds particularly to the engraving by Benjamin Green (1769) with slight differences taken from a painting formerly in the collection of Luke Scrafton Esq., now considered lost.


The surface has been cleaned, with some reduction to the original glazes

Rectangular form with plain polished finish, interior having rose gilt vermeil decoration with addition inscription, reading: ‘Harry Chilton from E’, stamped with 88-left facing kokoshnik mark assayed by Ivan Sergeyevich Lebedkin (Moscow, 1898 - 1914), along with ‘AN’ for Nevalainen.

LOT 712: A RARE MONUMENTAL SET OF FOUR WHITE CARVED MARBLE (ENGAINÉS) 19TH CENTURY STATUES AFTER FRANÇOIS BAROIS, GUILLAUME COUSTOU AND JEAN MELCHIOR RAON,

Representing ‘The Four Seasons’, Flora (‘Spring’) carries a basket of roses, one of which she is holding in her hand; Ceres (‘Summer’) wears a wreath and holds a sheaf of wheat aloft, a bundle of sheaves at her side; Autumn has draped his cloak over his head to protect himself from a cool breeze: he holds a piece of harvest bread; Vulcan (‘Winter’) is depicted as a bearded figure, his head draped with his cloak, a brazier in his hand and his robes trimmed with fur, originals in The Louvre Paris.
