LOT 48: YELLOW METAL & SIX ROSE CUT DIAMOND NECKLACE, YELLOW METAL TESTED AS 18CT GOLD. Having drop pendant set with four various round rose cut diamonds (largest approx. 4.5mm) with an addition two tear drop rose cut diamonds (6mm x 4mm). Diamonds are most likely 19th century. They are set in a later gold mount with partial open work galleries.

Pendant: 22mm x 14mm. Chain length: 50.5cm, gross weight-6.3g.

Decorated with a figural neoclassical scene amongst flora and fauna, held within gilt oval panel to one side, the otherside decorated with a spray of flowers, blue cobalt blue ground with gilt highlights, pierced gilt ormolu gallery with satyr mask terminals, raised on a chased square base with laurel wreath decoration.

Having rosso levanto rouge marble body with applied gilt rams head, urn, floral swags and scroll work decoration, stylised hoof feet to sides, upper horn of plenty surmounted by semi clad putti finial, carved Roman numeral dial, movement back plate marked ‘Vincenti & Cie, Medaille D'Argent, 1855’ and ‘2448’, garnitures having similar decoration with upper three branch candelabras.

LOT 368: MANNER OF GRINLING GIBBONS, A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CARVED GILTWOOD AND PAINTED MIRROR

Decorated with winged cherub heads, scrolling foliage, fruits, violin flute, trumpet and swags.

Provenance: The Rutland Arms in Bakewell - once acclaimed as 'Derbyshire's Most Famous Inn' was built in 1804


N.B. A well-known character of Bakewell, who had close associations with The Rutland Arms in its earliest years, was the multi-talented White Watson, 1760 - 1835. geologist, sculptor, stonemason and carver. He was the grandson of Samuel Watson, 1662 - 1715, an English Sculptor in wood and stone was a native of Heanor, Derbyshire. He was employed at Chatsworth House between 1690 or 1691 and 1711. just three miles to the north-east of Bakewell. Watson is known to have worked at Burghley House and at Sudbury Hall. Also working at Badminton, Burghley and Sudbury as was Grinling Gibbons, who had a great influence on Watson's work (Possible connection to the mirror?). Other similar carvings by Grinling Gibbons, can be found at Hampton Court Palace, Trinity College, Chapel Oxford, Petworth House, St. James, Piccadilly
