Composed of four separate enamelled copper plaques forming a continuous narrative scene, depicting the dead Christ at the tomb surrounded by the mourning Virgin, Saint John and attendant holy figures, painted predominantly en grisaille against a dark ground and sparingly heightened with yellow and green, with a Gothic inscription LE POSERENT EN UN MONUMENT, contained within a moulded oak frame.

LOT 212: AN IMPORTANT AND RARE DUTCH VOC ARMORIAL PEN-ENGRAVED IVORY INLAID EBONY DOCUMENT CASKET, MADE FOR ABRAM VAN BERLECOM, D. 1729, OPPERHOOFD OF BIMILIPATNAM, COROMANDEL COAST, INDIA, PROBABLY MASULIPATNAM OR BIMILIPATNAM, CIRCA 1717 - 1729

Rectangular form, the ebony ground profusely inlaid throughout with finely engraved ivory forming exceptionally dense scrolling flowering vines and foliage within geometric borders, the hinged lid centred by an elaborate quartered armorial achievement beneath a coroneted helm and bird crest, the arms incorporated into the original inlaid decoration above the inscription ‘D’Heer Abram Van Berlecom’, the sides s decorated with scrolling foliage , the interior of the lid further inlaid with a large scrolling flower , the original small ball feet now lacking.

Believed to be one of the earliest known personalised armorial caskets of this rare group, the present example belongs to an exceptionally finely worked class of early 18th Century Dutch colonial document boxes produced on India's Coromandel Coast for prominent officials of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).

LOT 216: A RARE LATE GOTHIC SOUTH NETHERLANDISH (PROBABLY BRUSSELS), CIRCA 1500 - 1520, CARVED OAK DEVOTIONAL RETABLE OF THE NATIVITY

The architectural upright form, the pegged oak framework with shaped pediment incorporating elaborate pierced Flamboyant Gothic tracery, enclosing three niches divided by twisted colonnettes and surmounted by crocketed Gothic canopies. The larger central compartment carved in high relief with the Nativity and Adoration of the Christ Child, the Virgin and Saint Joseph kneeling before the infant Christ, with attendant figures, the stable beyond with further figures looking through an opening and the ox and ass visible behind; flanked by two smaller niches standing saints, one crowned.

The square brass dial signed ‘Richard Lyons London’, with silvered Roman chapter ring and Arabic five minute divisions, subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and matted centre, with pierced steel hands and applied winged cherub-mask spandrels, the substantial two-train eight-day movement with brass plates united by turned pillars, striking on a bell.

The surfaces richly decorated throughout with carved and applied giltwood ornament, including laurel wreaths, palmettes, rosettes, foliate scrolls and other classical motifs. The suite comprises a large wardrobe the panel door opening to reveal shelf interior above two short over two long drawers raised on turned legs, large double bed , cabinet/commode with two short drawers above a pair of panelled doors opening to reveal fitted interior with three long drawers, dressing table with with three drawers, raised on turned legs terminating on casters and dressing table chair, an oval dressing table mirror with serpentine base with three drawers, two bedside cabinets and and a pair of open armchairs, locks stamped ‘MON KRIEGER AMEUBLEMENT PARIS’.

LOT 237: A PAIR OF GEORGE III (POSSIBLY IRISH) CHIPPENDALE DESIGN CARVED GILTWOOD PIER MIRRORS

With central carved Hoho bird with outstretched wings perched above a scrolling Rococo cresting of opposing ‘C’ scrolls centred by a pendant foliate clasp, the scrolling frame decorated with acanthus and leafy branches, with incised and punched dot decoration to the carved surface, enclosing a shaped rectangular mirror plate, the mirror plates replaced, the design relates to the French inspired ‘picturesque’ mirror patterns associated with the circle of Matthias Lock (d. 1765), whose published designs frequently incorporate exotic birds, rustic branches, ‘C’ scrolls and naturalistic foliage.
