LOT 186: MARCO RICCI, BELLUNO, 1676 - 1730, VENICE, 18TH CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS

Landscape, Roman Ruin Caprice, the prominent central motif of ruined archways is thought to be based on the Baths of Caracalla and through which can be seen the Pyramid of Cestius beyond and a portion of the Colosseum in foreground, two men raise a long ladder under the command of another, held in a giltwood and gesso framed.

N.B. Ricci was clearly influenced by the ruin-pieces of both Panini and Carlevarij, there are several versions of the composition and near identical engraved version of this composition, in reverse, is also known, a similar example to the present work can be found in the Royal Collection [RCIN 406906]

LOT 189: ATTRIBUTED TO SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK, 1599, ANTWERP, 1641, LONDON, 17TH CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS

'Portrait of a Pastor', Interior setting, with the subject draped in black with plain white lace collar, holding a small marked book and looking right whilst leaning against a carved column, to which is fastened a heraldic shield with a red cross on a yellow shield, this form of arms was originally adopted by Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk, C1200 - 1215, of note is the very fine brush work observed in the drapery, gilt framed.


Provenance: private collection, London, sold Christies, London, 15th Dec 1999, Lot 239, described as 'Follower of Giovanni Moroni', Re-lined in the 19th Century

This small preparatory study for the portrait known as 'Portrait of a Priest'/'Portrait of a Cleric', now in the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp. [Van Dyck, des Mesiters Gemalde, by Emil Schaeffer. Published 1909. Page 244. 'Portrait of a Priest' /Bildnes eines Priesters', dated to 1627-1632. Antwerp Museum. Size given as H1.16 B0.87}


This may also be the same painting seen by Sir Joshua Reynolds at the Antwerp Academy in 1781; 'good portrait of a priest, by Van-dyck'.

N.B. a good version after the original portrait of an unknown woman by Titian created, Circa 1536 [Now in the Palazzo Piti, Florence. 100cm x 75cm / 39ins x 30ins]. It is thought the same model was used by the artist in his masterpiece Venus of Urbino

LOT 143: CLOSE CIRCLE OF JAMES ABBOTT MCNEIL WHISTLER, 1834 - 1903, 19TH CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS

Portrait of the head of a girl with butterfly motifs, bearing two sets of Christie's stencil numbers verso and a rare canvas stamp for 'Wood & Co., 190 Brompton Road' (who are known to have supplied Whistler on a number of occasions), stamp dated between 1861 -1889, giltwood and gesso framed.

Condition: canvas appears to have been primed twice
