LOT 186: MARCO RICCI, BELLUNO, 1676 - 1730, VENICE, 18TH CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS
Landscape, Roman Ruin Caprice, the prominent central motif of ruined archways is thought to be based on the Baths of Caracalla and through which can be seen the Pyramid of Cestius beyond and a portion of the Colosseum in foreground, two men raise a long ladder under the command of another, held in a giltwood and gesso framed.

N.B. Ricci was clearly influenced by the ruin-pieces of both Panini and Carlevarij, there are several versions of the composition and near identical engraved version of this composition, in reverse, is also known, a similar example to the present work can be found in the Royal Collection [RCIN 406906]

Portrait of the head of a girl with butterfly motifs, bearing two sets of Christie's stencil numbers verso and a rare canvas stamp for 'Wood & Co., 190 Brompton Road' (who are known to have supplied Whistler on a number of occasions), stamp dated between 1861 -1889, giltwood and gesso framed.

Condition: canvas appears to have been primed twice
